Offshore job seekers in the finance industry have plenty of choice when it comes to choosing their next destination.

Epats can choose from the beaches of the Caribbean or the magic of Hong Kong. We give you a brief overview of each jurisdiction to help you find your ideal offshore finance job.

 

Bermuda

Bermuda Offshore

The Eastern Atlantic gem of Bermuda is one of the original offshore destinations. It is well developed, has excellent air links (with New York just a two-hour flight away) and a host of multi-national employers.

As a British Overseas Territory it offers both expats and employers comfort and has stimulated the growth of a booming financial ecomony. The main focus of the financial services industry is on insurance and reinsurance where Bermuda is third only to London and New York.

The island has a wonderful climate, cooled by the tradewinds in the hot summer months and mild in winter. As highly developed islands, expats can find most things thet require.

Taxes are low in Bermuda. There is no income tax, but the government does levy a 4.5% contribution towards the social security fund.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI)

The BVI is unique amongst offshore jurisdictions. It is a collections of 60 islands and cays, with a population of just 23,500.

The main focus of offshore finance is the island of Tortola, where most of the jurisdictions' population is based.

Expats are attracted to the BVI by its lack of development, stunning scenery ... It is also known as the sailing capital of the world.

It is fast becoming an inflential name in offshore financial services and is already the biggest global player in the formation of offshore companies or IBCs (International Business Companies).

The BVI government does levy taxes, but at only 8% they compare favourably to most onshore destinations.

The Cayman Islands

One of the most famous offshore jurisdictions, the Cayman Islands was also one of the first countries to embrace an offshore, low-tax structure and has benefited from its pioneering decision for more than 50 years.

The jurisdiction is a collection of three islands, 200 miles south of Cuba in the heart of the Caribbean, made up of Grand Cayman and its sister islands Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The financial industry is focussed around the capital George Town and Seven Mile Beach.

The British overseas territory is home to more hedge funds than any other country, along with a huge number of banks, accounting and legal firms.

It is the most developed island in the Caribbean reagion, with high-quality accommodation, good roads and transport links and a high standard of living.

There are no direct taxes on Cayman workers which means no income tax, capital gains tax or social secuirty contributions.

Dubai

Dubai offshore

Dubai is fast becoming a globally influential player across all offshore industries. Located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, the Emirate of Dubai has come to prominence in recent years as billions of oil dollars have been invested in creating an offshore hob to underpin the future economy of the region.

Hundreds of high-side office and apartment building have risen from the desert sands in recent years, producing a well-planned city with all the ameneties an offshore expat might want.

And there are no taxes, which means zero percent on income tax and CGT.

This dynamic region is pro-active in attracting new companies to the region with most major financial institution having offices there or considering opening new branches.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong Offshore

Hong Kong has a fully-justified reputation as Asia's economic powerhouse. Now under China's sovereignty as a Special Administrative Area, the region has continued to thrive and ranks highly in most expats' lists of ideal destinations.

It offers a city with a population of more seven million, which means it is highly developed, has an excellent transport network, established offshore employers, good quality accommodation and a strong expat communtiy.

Hong Kong is not so attractive on it's tax regime, with a top rate of income tax of 17%, but this is still low compared to most onshore jurisdictions such as London or New York.
