Relocating to a new finance job offshore...
Moving offshore is an exciting and challenging experience. Finance Jobs Offshore provides some helpful hints and tips to aid expats contemplating the move.
When relocating do not underestimate the loss of your network of friends and family, your support network. Although you will undoubtedly make new friends, do you want to be close enough that family can easily reach you? And how do they feel about the move? For a British expat, moving to the Channel Islands may be a lot closer than the long haul to Hong Kong
In line with advice to research your destination fully, dispel any illusions about the weather. Some countries do offer year-long sunshine, but is that the case everywhere? Can you cope with temperatures above 30 Celcius every day?
If you are considering Dubai then be aware that temperatures can reach 50 degrees in the height of summer (it was built in the desert after all!), whilst the Caribbean has the annual threat of hurricanes and Hong Kong can be extremely humid.
Fortunately all major offshore destinations use English as their first language, but will your knowledge of a second language sway your decision on which jurisdiction to choose?
So what comes first, the country or the job? Many people decide they want to live offshore and then set about looking for suitable position anywhere in the world, whilst others start with a destination. Both methods have merits, but if you choose the latter you may need to compromise on your ideal job. Start by talking to a CML agent to see how likely it is that a suitable position will arise in your jurisdiction of choice.
Relocating Pets And Possessions
If you’re a hot-shot financier then there’s every chance that your jobs will come with a significant relocation package. But if not then you’ll have to carefully consider the full cost of relocation. Shipping out all your personal items by sea can be expensive and do you need them all? Most things are available in your new country – at a cost.
And if you have pets and want to take them with you then you’ll need to look into not just the cost but also the practicalities and immigration procedures. A pet may drastically cut down your property rental problems too.
When you have considered many of these questions you should spend time researching your choice of destinations. Visit our Offshore Choices page for an overview of destinations.
